Napoleon’s Mamelukes

This page present biographies of those who fled Egypt and Syria when the French quit the Middle East and who ended up serving in the Mamelukes of the Imperial Guard. The list of Mamelukes which follows gives biographical details for personnel who returned with the French from Egypt or were drafted into the Mamelukes from foreign units of the French Army. It isn’t always easy to pinpoint a precise place of birth as the French military clerks jumbled names and the Mamelukes themselves made use of different geographical expressions for different places, or gave their ethnic group rather than the town of their birth. The picture is also complex when it comes to names. Throughout the period the spelling of names was very flexible and again an ethnic label or place of origin rather than a surname was sometimes preferred by the men whose details were being recorded on the regimental rolls (hence the number of men called Arménie). For a complex bureaucracy, such as that devised by the French military, just a first name was insufficient, and a surname was created if one was lacking. They were at something of a loss when a men stepped forward and in response to “name?” replied “Kralil Grec”.

In all some 582 individuals seem to have passed through the ranks during the life of this exotic unit. These are those who came from the Middle East or from the fringes of Napoleonic Europe. If anyone has additional information, do get in touch.

Note: LoH stands for Legion of Honour. Depot stands for the depot of Egyptian refugees at Marseille before 1802 or Melun near Paris from then on. However, individuals could still have elected to be sent back to Marseille to join family or connections. Marseille had a thriving Egyptian, Greek and Middle Eastern community throughout the 19th Century.
